R. S. Thomas is the reigning elder of Welsh poetry and letters. He is often referred to as “one of the few great poets writing in English.” He has written many books of poetry, prose, and criticism, including Experimenting with an Amen, Counterpoint, Mass for Hard Times, Collected Poems and Selected Poems 1946–1968. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature for 1996. He lives in Holyhead, the northwestern-most point in Wales.
