Eunice Odio (1919–1974) is considered the mother of Costa Rican poetry in the twentieth century. Born in San Jose in 1919, she traveled widely before settling for much of her life in Mexico City. The poem included here, “Possession In the Dream,” is from her first volume, Los Elementos Terrestres, which was published as the winner of the Premio Centroamericano “15 De Septiembre” prize for the year 1947.
