Shirlette Ammons

was born and raised in Mt. Olive, NC and is the author of Stumphole: Aunthology of Backwoods Blood (Big Drum Press, 2002), and a children’s book, The Train That Needed An Oil Change, which features illustrations by her twin sister, Shorlett Ammons-Stephens. She is also lead vocalist and bassist for the Raleigh-based band, stumP, which won the 2003 United Arts Council’s Emerging Artist Award. She is the recipient of the 1999 Ebony-Harlem Award, and was named Spectator Magazine’s Critic’s Choice for Best Poet in 2001.
